PONY is an acronym for Protect Our Nation's Youth. The concept for the name originally came from boys at the local YMCA in Washington, Pennsylvania and stood for "Protect Our Neighborhood Youth," but when PONY became an international program in the early 1950's "Neighborhood" was switched to "Nation's."

Palomino baseball focuses on the best and most competitive baseball players that are 17, 18 or 19 years old. Due to the competition environment for these talented players, teams are allowed to form their teams from a broader geographic region, and can include 15 and 16 year old players by forming as a combined Colt/Palomino team. The focus is to showcase the talents of the players as they reach the peak of their development. We want to provide these players a great venue and a real chance to compete at the highest level of the game and show what they are capable of doing.

Former Pony players have included both Bobby and Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Ken Griffey Jr. and Sr., Ryan Howard, Jeff Kent, Mark McGwire, Cal Ripken Jr., Alex Rodriguez, Barry Zito, Gary Sheffield, and J.T. Snow.
